I finished The Night Circus a couple months ago, so it is most definitely time for a review!
I bought this (on my kindle) after seeing many positive reviews for it. The circus theme was appealing to me. The synopsis on the book is also pretty mysterious, so it drew me and I wanted to know the story.
The story starts with two magicians challenging each other to a duel. This is no ordinary duel, though. This is a duel between their protegés. The magicians were Prospero the Enchancter and Mr. A.H. Prospero had a daughter who inherited his magical abilities. Her name is Celia. Mr. A.H. searched for a protegé and found one at an orphanage. Marco is his half of the dual.
At the beginning of the duel, Celia and Marco are magically tied to each other with invisible rings. Over the years, they are brought together in the Le Cirque des Rêves. Not surprisingly (based on the title of the book), the circus is only open at night. It does not announce its schedule. It will appear one day and disappear before the next morning.
Celia is the magic show in the circus. Marco helps the boss run things. The interesting thing about their duel is that they aren’t supposed to know who each other are … or, rather, they are supposed to figure it out on their own. Marco figures it out pretty quickly. By the time Celia figures it out, it’s apparent that they are very connected to the circus.
I won’t give away any spoilers, so I’ll stop there! I really enjoyed this book. I mean, it has some hokey parts and I felt like the romance element developed too quickly. The magic in this world is not explained, so you don’t have to think about it too much. This book is great if you want to read something slightly fantastical without feeling committed to learning a new world.
Have you read The Night Circus? What did you think of it?
