Today’s post is a little different. I’ve never shared the way I store my makeup. I’ve been using this makeup organizational system for about six months and have come to love it. It’s super affordable and can accommodate a moderate amount of makeup. I like to think it’s makeup storage for regular people (if you’ve seen any makeup collection videos on Youtube, you get what I mean).
So, back in the summer, I decided it was time to get my makeup situation sorted out. I’d been keeping all my makeup products in a plastic three-drawer system under my bathroom sink. It just wasn’t cutting it. Not only was there not enough room, but the drawers were always coming off the tracks.
I’ve seen tons of makeup organizational videos on Youtube and almost all of them involve the Ikea Alex drawers. While those are nice and very pretty, I don’t live near an Ikea and shipping it to my house doubles the price (!!!!). If I ever have room for a vanity area, the Ikea Alex drawers will be my first priority. I don’t actually need all of the room of the Alex drawers, but they are very pretty. Plus, I would probably use the extra space for other things, like crafting suplplies. For now, I need something that sits on top of my dresser. And that’s where this drawer system comes in!
When I decided to share my makeup storage, I thought about moving the drawers out in better light to make the pictures pretty. But, honestly, this is real life. My makeup is literally surrounded by my jewelry and my husband’s stuff. The background is framed by a cluttered bulletin board. It’s not delicately displayed anywhere. It’s used, abused, and organized. And this is what my makeup collection really looks like.
I bought this three-drawer scrapbooking organizer from Michael’s. I had a 40% off coupon that I used, which made it $24 (plus tax, of course). It’s held up so well! You can label each drawer, but as you can see I haven’t done that yet. I’ve rearranged my makeup a couple times, and I think I’m happy with the way it is.
The organizers within the drawers actually came from the dollar section at Target. Before, I was using Birchbox boxes (and I still am in a few spots). Either way works. I always keep my eye out for cheap storage solutions in the Target dollar section.
In the top drawer, I keep face products. Foundations, bb creams, cc creams, and face primers go in one box. Bronzers and highlighters are in the back. Powders and a couple face primers are on the right. Blushes are in the back.
King of the Hill, anyone? 😉
I keep almost all of my eye products in the middle drawer. Most of my large eyedshadow palettes fit here. I have two extra large ones that sit on top of the drawers. Large palettes go in the front, with the small er palettes in the back. Cream eyeshadows and eyeshadow bases are on the right. Extra eyeshadow bases and eyeshadow sticks are in the middle. Single eyeshadows are on the back left.
This drawer is serious stuff. You all know how much I love lip products. My lip products take up the majority of the third drawer.
On the left, I keep eye products that wont’ fit in the middle drawer. So, basically, all my eyeliners and mascaras are on the left.
I have lip crayon and chubby stick-esque products in the middle front.
On the right, I keep all of my lipsticks. I pretty much have them organized by brand, since that’s how I remember colors.
In the back, I have all lip glosses and chapsticks. That area isn’t as organized as the rest of the drawer, because I haven’t found a container that will fit in that space. For now, it’s pretty haphazard.
Last but not least, this is what it looks like on the top. I keep my current foundations and powder in the front, with all of my brushes behind them. To the right, in the front, I keep my current makeup favorites. I don’t like digging around the drawers every time I want to put on makeup. Every couple weeks or month (or so, whenever I want to switch things up), I will switch out the makeup in this container. All the way in the back right, I have a box of my makeup samples.
I really like this organization system. It’s worked very well so far!
How do you organizer your makeup?
