I recently finished Wonder by R.J. Palacio. This is a quick, uplifting read that I would recommend to everyone!
This book is about August Pullman. August was born with facial deformities. He has gone through a lot of surgeries and, as a result, was home-schooled his entire life. That is, until the point at which this story takes place.
The summer before August started middle school, his mother decided it was time for August to start private school. This is a huge deal, since August can’t go anywhere without people staring, double-taking, and gawking. August starts middle school at a very nice private school. In fact, the principal of the school is one of my favorite characters. August’s foray into school is definitely a bumpy road, but he gains friends along the way. I don’t think I’d be spoiling much if I said that the ending is so good. And… I’m not much of a crier when it comes to books, but this one made me boohoo a little.
The book is split up into sections. Most of it is told from August’s perspective. Other parts are told by his friends and sister. It is super interesting to hear the story from the other characters. In fact, I didn’t care for his sister all that much until I read her section (ahh.. totally the theme of the book). And on that note, if you read this, get the version with the bonus Julian chapters! Seriously, find the Julian chapters and read them. Perspective all over the place!
This was a(nother) super quick read. I read about 75% of it in a couple hours.
Have you read it? Who was your favorite character? Aside from August, I really like his mom and dad, principal, and sister. Oh, and I also really liked Julian’s grandmother (Julian chapters!! read them!)
