I am not sure if this is a surprise to anyone, but I really enjoy comic books and graphic novels. Back a couple of years, when I was in undergrad, I minored in English and took a Women in Literature course. One of our required books was Persepolis. It was really great and got me interested in graphic novels.
One weekend when Will, the kids, and I were in Raleigh, we wandered around Barnes & Noble. I picked up Amulet Book One: The Stonekeeper because the art work drew me in. The story is very interesting. It follows Emily Navin, brother and sister, whose father dies at the beginning of the story. The move with their widow mother to the deserted home of their deceased great-grandfather.
The home had been deserted for a very long time, and at first it just looks like an old-fashioned home. As they begin to clean it up, a creature sneaks around inside the house and lures their mom into the basement. From there, she is taken into an underground world. That world is full of strange things, and Emily and Navin track the monster to get their mom back.
Along the way, they come across not only a talking bunny named Miskit but also their great-grandfather! Her great-grandfather has been in this strange world for some time and has all the resources that Emily and Navin need to find their mother and bring her back home. Emily discovers a lot about her family and herself as she journeys to save the most important person in her life.
This is the first part in a series. In fact, the sixth installment was released last year. I’m a little behind 🙂
