If you’ve been starting to contemplate your summer-to-fall wardrobe, then this is the post for you! Autumn is just around the corner, and depending on where you live, you may already be noticing a change in the weather. Fortunately, I’ve put in the legwork so all you have to do is follow a few simple tips for a fashionable changing of the seasons. Plus, another advantage is that you probably have one, or several, of these pieces already waiting in your closet. So before fall officially arrives, let’s get started!
1. Dresses
Ah, the trusty dress. These stylish, yet practical pieces are the epitome of perfect summer-to-fall attire, and Fashion Magazine’s bloggers think so, too. Like these style gurus, wear them as-is with heels and your favorite accessories when the weather is warm, and when the temps begin to cool, pair them with tights, booties, a blazer, and your favorite scarf. Even if your dress is lightweight, like the popular shirt dress style, the secret to transitioning well is in the layers.
2. Long T-Shirts
This might seem super basic, but a long t-shirt, whether past your hips or down to your thighs, presents a lot of options in your transition from summer to fall. Obviously these work well with jeans — boyfriend, flare, or skinny — as well as shorts, and trousers. But when autumn rolls around, work these in by pairing them with knits. From chunky sweaters, to smart cardigans, the T-shirt absolutely serves a purpose in your wardrobe evolution.
3. Jean Jackets
A jean jacket is the perfect on the go cover up as the seasons begin to change. Tote this around for cool evenings, and for the times when those cold interiors give you a chill. These are a great choice for pairing with casual looks, like shift dresses with knee-high boots, shorts with booties, or leggings with a long Oxford shirt and a fedora.
4. Long Waistcoat
This piece is essentially like a really long vest that resembles a trenchcoat, but without the sleeves. The beauty of a piece like this is that it can be worn just as easily with short sleeve tops as it can with long sleeves and sweaters. Long waistcoats typically skim the thighs, falling a few inches above the knee. Editors at Elle know just how awesome these are as a segue into fall, and how amazing they look amazing with skinny jeans and multiple layers.
5. Ballet Flats
Fashion experts at Lyst highly recommend flats as the new must-have footwear for fall. Perfectly fine to wear in the summer with shorts, dresses, capris, and jeans, but also awesome for cooler temps too. Ballet flats look great with tights layered under leg baring garments, plus they’re great for work or weekend wear. Whether you prefer yours in a neutral leather, or a “look at me” sparkle, there’s a pair to fit every occasion.
With so many simple and straightforward ways to evolve your wardrobe from hot to cool this year, there’s no reason why you won’t be looking your best all season long. Check your closet before shopping, and get creative with what you already have. Remember that layering is the key, and can really help bring almost every summery outfit into fall without a hitch.
